From time to time, I like to brand certain seasons with a particular theme that I feel sums them up appropriately. In the past there was the "Summer of No Regrets", a year of "Stop Thinking, Start Doing", and "2008: Year of Change".
With our economy in a meltdown, two questionable wars being fought, continuing unrest in the Middle East, job losses crossing into the millions, and countless cases of social injustice...it's time for action.
As I begin to think about what our collective future in 2009 will hold, it seems to me that it's time to re-focus...everything.
We can no longer afford to sit on the sidelines as the world spins madly on. It's time for us to step up to the plate, and begin making some tough decisions.
Maybe you're living in a house two sizes larger than what you wallet can bare. It's time to downsize. Maybe you're working in a dead end job. Yes the market is tight, but it's time to dust off the 'ol resume and get back out there. Perhaps you've been watching from afar as some struggle to find clean drinking water an ocean away. It's time to sign up to help.
In fact, I think the toughest (and most immediate need) we have hits a bit closer to home. I think we, which means me, need to spend the next year re-focusing our hearts, goals, and passions.
Like I said, it's time to get off the sidelines. It's time to act. It's time to change. It's time to re-focus.

My Predictions for 2009
It's several days into the new year, and no doubt you have read a whole host of predictions for the year ahead. Some serious, some hilarious, and some downright useless.
I decided to combine all three in my predictions for 2009...
10. iTunes U puts community colleges out of business
9. Facebook grows to 500 million members worldwide
8. Mike Tyson vs. George Foreman
7. Chysler/GM merge to form even worse business model
6. Spirit Airlines will begin service to Cuba!
5. Larry King finally admits the truth: he's Elvis Presley
4. Reality TV will outnumber all other TV shows 2:1
3. First black President will take office (oh wait, check.)
2. Oprah bails out 100 million Americans
1. Your mom will began following you...on Twitter
What do you think will happen in 2009, any predictions?

And the Winner Is: Change

Just after I began this blog, back in February, I declared 2008: Year of Change.
Little did I know what that would entail. Let's take a look back at some of the major change agents of 2008 (via Seth Godin)...
1. A virtually unknown politician, a black man who's father was from Africa, was elected president, in a landslide
2. Fidel Castro finally stepped down
3. Online video reached the tipping point, Americans watched more video online than on TV
4. An earthquake in Myanmar killed more than 100,000 people
5. The economy experienced a once in a century meltdown (and subsequent season of bailouts)
6. Apple again revolutionizes the mobile market with the launch of iPhone 3G and their online App Store
7. Britney Spears had a hit record
8. China became the fourth largest economy in the world
What a year! I think we all need to take a collective deep breath and accept the fact that we're living in a volatile time. From Wall Street to Main Street, change is in the air. And it's here to stay.
Any predictions on what 2009 will bring?

Dear Obama Haters
Give it up. At the risk of jinxing the guy, I'm going to go ahead and make things much easier for all parties involved. Barack Obama is going to win the DNC's nomination this summer (the smart money is saying sometime in June.) Then he will go on to win the election on Nov. 4th, 2008 and be sworn in as the 44th President of the United States in January.
Oh and in case you were wondering, by my calculations he has about a 87.6% chance of winning re-election in 2012. That is assuming of course he doesn't have any major missteps in his first term in office. And there's always the outside chance that the Clintons will try to impeach him.
As for anyone that's caught up in the Clinton/Obama scandal or mildly enthusiastic about the GOP's chances this year...it's okay. No one's going to judge you for those thoughts and hopes of yours. I'm just trying to give you the heads up that its not going to work out for you this time.
My advice would be to take a look at the potential field of candidates for 2016. And watch out for the Independent Party, they will be more than fed up with the polarization of our two party system and be looking for a well spoken leader with a familiar face. Mark my words, we have not seen the last of the Ron Paul "Revolutionaries."
That said, I do hope that Barack Obama is able to back up all of his "soaring rhetoric" and actually make some (if only a small) change in politics as usual in Washington. Is there a chance he could be the next Jimmy Carter? Sure, but I'll take that over George W's third term as some are calling a McCain Presidency. (And I voted for the man, twice.)
